Aabot sa P23.8 milyong halaga ng smuggled na imported na refined sugar na mula sa Hong Kong ang nasabat ng Bureau of Customs sa Manila International Container Port.
Ayon kay Customs Commissioner Yogi Filemon Ruiz, unang ideneklara ang kargamento bilang surge arresters, slippers outsoles at Styrene Butadiene rubber at naka-consign sa Burias Jang Consumer Goods Trading.
“Our targeted examinations and close work with the DA (Department of Agriculture) and their attached agencies yielded significant quantities of smuggled agricultural products these recent months and helped protect Philippines agriculture from the economic impact smuggling carries,” pahayag ni Ruiz.
Sasailalim sa seizure at forfeiture proceedings ang mga nakumpiskang asukal.
Inihahanda naman ng BOC Action Team Against Smugglers ang paghahain ng kaso laban sa mga may-ari ng asukal.
