Nakatakdang ilunsad ang una sa dalawang 94-meter multi-role response vessels (MRRV) sa Shimonoseki Shipyard ng Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. sa Japan sa araw ng Miyerkules, July 28, 2021.
Nakuha ng Department of Transportation (DOTr) ang dalawang multi-role response vessel para sa Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) sa ilalim ng Maritime Safety Capability Improvement Project Phase II (MSCIP Phase 2).
Oras na maipadala sa Pilipinas, ang dalawang MRRV ang magiging pinakamalaking vessel ng PCG.
Inaasahang makatutulong ang MRRV para mapagbuti ang maritime security at maritime safety capabilities ng naturang ahensya.
Kayang maisagawa ang nasabing barko ang maritime patrols sa bansa, kabilang ang West Philippine Sea at Philippine Rise.
Maliban dito, mapapalakas din ang kapasidad ng PCG sa pagkakasa ng maritime search and rescue, maritime law enforcement, at maging ng humanitarian assistance at disaster response operations.
Inaasahang darating sa Maynila ang unang 94-meter MRRV sa March 2022, habang ang ikalawang vessel naman ay darating sa bansa makalipas ang dalawang buwan o sa May 2022.
Ayon kay Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade, mabilis ang modernisasyon sa PCG
“In fact, in this effort to make it quick, fast, and very meaningful, the government of Japan has contributed very much. And to which I express my appreciation for your continued support,” pahayag ng kalihim.
Malaking tulong aniya ito para sa pagresponde sa maritime incidents sa karagatang sakop ng bansa at exclusive economic zone (EEZ).
Ayon naman kay PCG Commandant, Admiral George Ursabia Jr., “We are making a milestone, not just for the Department of Transportation and Philippine Coast Guard, but also for the Philippines – acquiring the first-ever biggest ship for the Coast Guard. It is a big stride in the development of our country in the context of maritime security and maritime safety.”
Ang MSCIP Phase 2 ay isang Japanese-assisted project na pinondohan sa pamamagitan ng Official Development Assistance (ODA) Loan mula sa Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
