Pinangunahan ni Senate President Vicente Sotto III ang necrological service para sa yumaong dating Senator Sen. John Henry “Sonny” Osmeña.
Ipinaalala ni Sotto na ilan sa mga mahahalagang isinulong ng yumaong senador ay ang
Municipal Telephone Act, ang Mini-Hydroelectric Program, at ang Public Telecommunications Act of 1995, na nagpabago ng husto at nagpaunlad sa information and communications technology sa bansa gayundin ang pagbuo sa Philippine Postal Corporation.
Ipinaliwanag pa nito na kung bakit tinaguriang ‘Lone Ranger’ ng Senado si Osmeña dahil sa pagiging independent minded at walang kinakatakutan kahit mag-isa lang siyang naninindigan sa isyu.
“I could liken his wit to that of his contemporaries, like former Senators (Ernesto) Maceda, (Jovito) Salonga, and (Heherson) Alvarez, just to name a few. For this reason, it is no doubt that Senator Sonny Osmeña served as a senator with distinction,” sabi pa nito.
Dagdag naman ni Senate Minority Leader Franklin Drilon isa si Osmeña sa mga labis na inirerespeto at may makulay na personalidad sa mundo ng politika sa bansa.
“Sonny Osmeña was an ultimate politician, a colorful personality, a realist and a reformer. But as colorful as his political life was, he chose to leave quietly when he peacefully died in his sleep. Farewell ‘Lone Ranger’, you will always live in the hearts of the Filipino people who you served well,” ang bahagi ng mensahe ni Drilon
Ibinigay ni Sotto kay John Gregory, anak ni Osmeña, ang kopya ng Senate Resolution No. 85, kung saan ipinahayag ng buong Senado ang kanilang pakikidalamhati at pakikiramay sa naulilang pamilya.
Pasado alas-2 ng hapon ng mamatay si Osmeña noong nakaraang Pebrero 3.
