NPC, kinatigan ang desisyon ng SEC na ipatigil ang operasyon ng Rappler
Nanindigan ang National Press Club of the Philippines na tama lamang ang desisyon ng Securities and Exchange Commission upang ipatigil ang operasyon ng news website na Rappler.
Sa pahayag ni NPC President Paul Gutierrez, ipinunto nito na ang ‘responsible journalism’ ay katumbas ng pagtalima sa itinatakda ng batas.
“Responsible journalism also means complying with the law,” ayon kay Gutierrez.
Ayon kay Gutierrez, naninindigan ang NPC na hindi naapektuhan ng desisyon ng SEC ang press freedom at kalayaan na magpahayag ang desisyon ng SEC matapos nitong ipatigil ang operasyon ng Rappler dahil sa paglabag ng media entity sa probisyon sa Konstitusyon na 100 porsyentong kontrol at ‘ownership’ ng Pilipino sa mga media outfits.
“Where mass media is concerned, no (foreign) control whatsoever may be granted. 100 percent Filipino control means zero (“0”) foreign control. ‘Control’ is any influence over corporate policy, and not limited to ownership of stock,” ayon kay Gutierrez.
Paliwanag pa ni Gutierrez, masusing pinag-aralan ng NPC ang 29-pahinang desisyon, at lumalabas na talagang nilabag ng Rappler ang batas nang payagan nitong pumasok ang foreign investors, partikular na ang Omidyar Network Fund LLC na magkaroon ng kontrol sa ‘corporate matters’ ng news media site base na rin sa isinumiteng mga dokumento sa SEC.
Dagdag pa ni Gutierrez, naantala ang pahayag ng NPC na pinakamatanda at pinaka-malaking organisasyon ng mga aktibong media practitioners sa bansa dahil sinuri pa nila ng husto ang naging desisyon ng SEC para hindi madala sa bugso ng damdamin.
Ayon pa sa Pangulo ng NPC, ‘premature’ pa na sabihin na hinahadlangan ng desisyon ng SEC ang freedom of the press dahil isa lang naman ang Rappler sa libo-libong media entities na patuloy na nag-ooperate sa bansa.
“In the broader Philippine media industry, Rappler is just one among the thousands of media entities in the country and whose operations have remained free. There are about 436 television broadcast stations, 411 AM radio stations, over 1,000 FM radio stations and more than 400 newspapers today operating freely in the country besides those that now have proliferated in social media and whose actual number no one really has any idea. To say that the fate of one media entity found to have run afoul with the law translates to media repression in the country is stretching the argument a bit too much,” ayon kay Gutierrez.
