Commander ng unang flight ng “Challenger” space shuttle, pumanaw na

Pumanaw na sa edad na 85 ang commander ng first launch ng space shuttle na “Challenger” na si Paul Weitz.

Sa pangunguna ni Weitz, lumipad tungong kalawakan ang Challenger noong April 1983.

Lumipad ito mula Kennedy Space Center sa Florida at lumapag sa Edwards Air Force Base sa California.

Matatandaan na sa 10th launch ng nasabing Space Shuttle noong January 28, 1986 ay pito ang namatay.

Si Weitz din ang nagsilbing command module pilot sa first batch ng crew ng orbiting space laboratory na Skylab noong 1973.

Pumanaw ang retired astronaut sa kanyang retirement home sa Flagstaff Arizona nitong Lunes.

Nakapaggugol si Weitz ng 793 sa kalawakan at nagretiro bilang deputy director ng Johnson Space Center noong May 1994.

Ayon kay Curtis Brown, Chairman of the Board ng Astronaut Scholarship Foundation nakatatak na bilang synonym ng pangalan ni Weitz ang Space Shuttle na Challenger.
