Nasa 75 porsyento ng lupang tinataniman sa bansa ang nanganganib na gumuho.
Sa talumpati ni Pangulo Marcos Jr., sa unang National Soil Health Summit sa Maynila, sinabi nito na nasa 457 milyong metrikong tonelada nang lupa ang nawala.
“The conversion of lands for settlements and the loss of about 47,000 hectares of forest cover every year contributes significantly to soil degradation. Aside from these, around 11 to 13 million hectares are considered degraded. This is on top of the 2.2 million hectares that suffer from insufficient levels of soil fertility,” pahayag nito.
Dagdag pa ng Pangulo, ang hindi tamang paggamit ng abono at pesticides ang ilan sa mga dahilan kung kaya nagkakaroon ng polusyon ang lupa at nagiging acidify ang lupa.
Ayon sa Punong Ehekutibo, may malaking banta ngayon sa lupa.
“Needless to say, our soil is under threat and to continue to neglect this vital agricultural component will lead to even worse crisis in the future,” pahayag ng Pangulo.
Kaya’t mahalaga aniya ang isinagawang unang National Soil Health Summit.
Sa panig aniya ng gobyerno, mayroon nang inilatag na 5-point priority agenda para sa soil at water management.
Halimbawa na ang National Soil Health Program at Implementation of Sustainable Land Management.
Sa ganitong paraan, sinabi ng Pangulo na matitiyak ang tamang paggamit at management ng soil resources, matutugunan ang land degradation, mapapalago ang crop productivity at mapapalakas ang income ng mga magsasaka.
