Umapila ang climate change activists sa Japan na tigilan na ang pagpopondo sa fossil gas at iba pang teknolohiya na nakasisira ng kalikasan.
Ayon kay Lidy Nacpil, coordinator ng Asian Peoples’ Movement on Debt and Development (APMDD) at convenor ng Asian Energy Network (AEN), nagsagawa ng Asia-wide protests sa 12 siyudad ang ibat ibang climate change activists ilang araw bago ang G7 Leaders Summit na gaganapin sa Hiroshima, Japan sa May 19-21.
Kabilang sa mga protesta ay isinagawa sa Dhaka, Kolkata, Bodhgaya, Chhattisgarh, Jakarta, Chiang Mai, Kathmandu, Lahore, Manila, Colombo, Hanoi at Hiroshima.
“Japan and the rest of the G7 display a blatant disregard for the pressing needs of both people and the planet, instead of meeting their climate finance obligations and fulfilling their commitment to end by 2022 their public financing of fossil fuels,” pahayag ni Nacpil.
Nabatid na ang Japan ang nagsisilbing G7 president at bukod tanging Asian member ng pitong world’s advanced economies kasama na ang Canada, Italy, Germany, France, United Kingdom at United States, na pawang mga large fossil fuel financiers.
“A swift, equitable, and just transition to renewable energy systems is urgently required, yet the G7’s actions are causing continued suffering in Asian communities as a result of gas projects that have been promoted and financed by Japan, other G7 nations, and the Global North over several decades,” sabi pa ni Nacpil.
