Sampung megabanks at korporasyon ang ginawaran ng “Yakee Awards” ng Asian Peoples’ Movement on Debt and Development (APMDD) at Philippine Movement for Climate Justice (PMCJ).
Kabilang sa mga binigyan ng award ang San Miguel Corporation, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC), Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group(MUFG), Mizuho, CITI and HSBC; and corporations and developers: Japan’s Energy for a New Era (JERA), San Miguel Corporation (SMC), Atlantic Gulf & Pacific Company (AG&P), Powerchina, at China Huadian.
“We are giving Yakee Awards to the largest financiers of fossil fuels in Asia and to corporations and developers responsible for fossil fuels expansion in the region,” pahayag ni Nacpil.
“Climate action and ambition remain profoundly insufficient to meet the global goal of keeping temperature rise to below 1.5 degrees C to avoid climate catastrophe. The latest scientific reports underline the urgent need to at least halve global emissions by 2030 and fully decarbonize by 2050 to save people and the planet from catastrophic levels of warming. And this means no new gas fields can be built, as well as no new coal and oil development. This is non-negotiable,” pahayag ni Nacpil.
