Pinuna ni reelectionist Senator Leila de Lima ang pag-akto muli ni Pangulong Duterte na tagapagsalita ng China sa pahayag na respetuhin ng mga Filipino ang Recto Bank exploration agreement deal para maiwasan ang anumang sigalot.
Sinabi ng senadora na ang tanging paraan para pumasok sa exploration deal ay igalang ng China ang karapatan ng Pilipinas sa ating exclusive economic zone sa ilalim ng UNCLOS.
“Now that Duterte has lifted the moratorium on oil and natural gas exploration in Recto Bank, he returns as a spokesperson to China to communicate their threat if we do not push through with a joint exploration with them,” sabi pa ni de Lima.
Noong Marso 7, hiniling ni Pangulong Duterte na matuloy na ang joint development ng Pilipinas at China sa Recto Bank.
Katuwiran ng Punong Ehekutibo, hindi pa handa ang Pilipinas na maging kaaway ang China.
Magugunita na Nobyembre, 2018 nang pumirma sina Pangulong Duterte at Chinese President Xi Jinping ng memorandum of understanding para sa joint maritime oil and gas exploration.
Tumanggi naman si Pangulong Duterte na isapubliko ang nilalaman ng kasunduan at giit ni de Lima hindi maaring irespeto ang kasunduan ng hindi nakakatiyak na alinsunod ito sa Saligang Batas.
