Tiniyak ni Education Secretary Leonor Briones na bibigyang proteksyon ng kanilang hanay ang mga estudyante para mailayo sa paninigarilyo.
Ginawa ni Briones ang pahayag sa pagdalo sa Conference on Building and Celebrating Tobacco Control Champions: Promoting, Defending, and Institutionalizing Smoke-Free Environment Policies na inorganisa ng Department of Health (DoH), Department of Education (DepEd), Philippine Smoke-Free Movement (PSFM), Philippine Legislators’ Committee on Population and Development (PLCPD), Health Justice (HJ) at Social Watch of the Philippines (SWP).
Ayon kay Briones, mahalaga na mapangalagaan ang kinabukasan ng mga kabataan.
Dahil dito, paiigtingin aniya ng DepEd ang kampanya laban sa paninigarilyo.
“We are talking about the dreams of young people that can only be achieved if they grow up healthy and free from the harms of tobacco products,” pahayag ni Briones.
Nakatutuwa ayon kay Briones na may mga grupo ang nagsusulong at ginagawang adbokasiya ang paglaban sa paninigarilyo at hindi nagpapatukso sa pera.
Base sa pag-aaral ng World Health Organization, ang kabataan ang karaniwang target ng tobacco industry.
Naniniwala si Briones na mapagtatagumpayan na mailayo ang mga kabataan sa paninigarilyo kung paiigtingin ang Smoke-Free Environments.
