Pinakamalaking public private partnership project ng pamahalaan ang Philippine National Railways’ North-South Railway Project.

Ang proyekto ay nagkakahalaga ng 170 Billion Pesos na inaasahang magsasaayos sa humigit kumulang 600 kilometro ng railway lines mula Metro Manila patungong Legaspi, Albay.

Kabilang sa katuwang ng pamahalaan sa naturang programa ang mga malalaking pribadong kumpanya gaya ng San Miguel Corporation, Ayala Corporation, at Metro Pacific Investments.

“This is our biggest project yet: the revival of the oldest rail system in Southeast Asia, beginning with the Manila-Legazpi section plus additional branch lines totalling 653 kilometers,” ayon kay Transportation Secretary Joseph Abaya.

Magsisimula ang pagbibigay ng guidelines sa mga prospective bidders simula August 31.

Ang mananalong bidder ang siyang mag-ooperate, maintain, at upgrade ng nasabing South Line sa loob ng 34 na taon, kasama ang apat na taong pagbuo ng nasabing railway line.

Ayon pa sa DOTC, magkakaroon ng sampung biyahe kada araw gamit ang pitong train sets na dadaan sa 66 railway stations. Target na magsimula ang operasyon ng nasabing south line sa taong 2020./ Stanley Gajete
