Climate activists sa Japanese Megabanks: Don’t gas Asia!

Sumugod sa tanggapan ng Mizuho, MUFG at SMBC banks sa Makati City ang mga miyembro ng climate at energy activists.

Ito ay para kalampagin ang mga nabanggit na kompanya na itigil na ang pagpopondo sa gas at LNG projects sa Asya.

Ayon kay Lidy Nacpil, coordinator ng Asian Peoples’ Movement on Debt and Development, ang tatlong nabanggit na bangko ay nagbibigay ng pondo para sa coal at gas projects sa rehiyon sa kabila nang paglagda sa Paris Agreement noong 2015.

Sabi ni Nacpil, sa nakalipas na pitong taon, ang tatlong nabanggit na Japanese na bangko ay nagbigay na ng halos kalahating trilyong US dollars na halaga ng loans, bonds at underwritings sa fossil fuel infrastructures.

Base aniya sa report ng Banking on Climate Chaos, nagbigay na ang MUFG ng $220 billion; Mizuho ng $190 billion; at SMBC ng $136 billion.

“If private banks continue to provide financing to companies that extract and burn fossil fuels, there is no chance that we can prevent the rise in temperature to 1.5 degrees. And when that limit is breached, we will have to suffer from more catastrophic impacts of climate change.” Pahayag ni Nacpil.

Nagbigay na ng pangako ang tatlong bangko na magdi-decarbonize sa kanilang financing portfolio sa taong 2050.

“If Mizuho, MUFG, and SMBC are true to their commitment to help address the climate crisis, they should heed to the call and demand of communities affected most by climate change. Don’t Gas Asia!” pahayag ni Nacpil.
