Base sa impormasyon mula sa sa US Department of Defense, nakasaad sa guidelines na gagamitin ang mutual defense commitment sa ilalim ng 1951 PH-US Mutual Defense Treaty kapag mayroong pag-atake sa Pacific region.
Kabilang na rito ang banta sa land, sea, air, space, at cyberspace attack.
Una nang sinabi ng Amerika na ipagtatanggol ang Pilipinas sakaling may ginawang pag-atake sa South China Sea.
