Defense program ng ama, pinabubuhay ni Sen. Imee Marcos

Kasabay ng pagpapaigting sa Philippines – US Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) at pagpapatibay sa ‘defense and security cooperation’ sa Japan, nais ni Senator Imee Marcos na buhayin ang isang national defense program na sinimulan ng kanyang yumaong ama, si dating Pangulong Ferdinand Marcos Sr.

Sa pagbisita ni Sen. Marcos sa AFP – Western Mindanao Command sa Zamboanga Sibugay, nabanggit niya ang Self-Reliant Defense Posture (SRDP) ng kanyang ama na ikinasa noong 1974.

Ito naman aniya ay para mabawasan ang pag-depende ng Pilipinas sa ibang bansa sa usapin ng ‘national defense.’

“In the 70’s to early 80’s, our SRDP was already producing M-16 rifles under license, steel helmets, hand grenades and other ammunition, handheld radios, Jiffy jeeps. It also created jobs and minimized foreign spending,” katuwiran ng namumuno sa Senate Committee on Foreign Relations.

Paliwanag niya, sa programa gumagamit ng mga  lokal na materyales ang ginagamit bukod sa mga ‘imported parts.

Dagdag pa niya sa ngayon naniniwala siya na may sapat na kaalaman at kakayahan na ang Filipino sa tulong na rin ng National Science Development Board (NSDB).

“There’s no question about Filipino capability, but we must revive the SRDP now,”  diin ni Marcos.
