Nagtagumpay ang Bureau of Customs-Port of NAIA at ang Department of Environment and Naturan Resources na ma-convict sa kasong illegal wildlife trading ang dalawang katao na responsable sa smuggling sa wildlife species.
Ayon kay BOC-NAIA District Collector Carmelita Talusan, base sa hatol ng Metropolitan Trial Court sa Pasay City, kulong ng 10 araw at multa na P26,000 ang ipinataw na parusa sa isang indibidwal na sangkot sa smuggling ng 10 tarantulas.
Nagkakahalaga ang bawat tarantula ng P75,000. Ideneklara ang mga wildlife species bilang “origami.”
Pitong buwan na pagkakulong at multa na P125,000 ang ipinataw na parusa sa isang indibidwal na sangkot naman sa smuggling ng 41 na wildlife species na kinabibilangan ng sulcate tortoise, black pond turtle, bearded dragon, corn snake, at savannah lizards na nagkakahalaga ng P284,000.
Kinasuhan ang dalawa sa paglabag sa Section [i] ng Republic Act No. 9147 (Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act) at Section 1401 (a) ng Republic Act No. 10863 (Customs Modernization and Tariff Act).
Ayon kay Talusan, pinaigting nila ang border protection, trade facilitation at revenue collection base na rin sa utos ni BOC Commissioner Yogi Filemon Ruiz.
