Ito ay matapos ang ginawang pananampal ni Smith sa koemdyanteng si Chris Rock sa 94th Academy Awards.
“I am resigning from membership in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and will accept any further consequences the Board deems appropriate,” pahayag ni Smith.
“My actions at the 94th Academy Awards presentation were shocking, painful, and inexcusable,”dagdag ng aktor.
Ayon kay Smith, maraming tao ang nasaktan dahil sa ginawa niyang pananampal kay Rock.
“The list of those I have hurt is long and includes Chris, his family, many of my dear friends and loved ones, all those in attendance, and global audiences at home,” pahayag ng aktor.
Sinampal ni Smith si Rock nang ginawang katatawanan ng huli ang asawa niyang si Jada Pinkett Smith na may sakit na alopecia o pagkalagas ng buhok.
