Isang partylist, umapela ng mabilis na suporta para sa Siargao

Umapela ang AP Partylist sa Department of Tourism (DOT) upang mapabilis ang pagbangon ng Siargao mula nang masalanta ng Bagyong Odette.

Ayon kay AP Partylist nominee Ronnie Ong, mabagal ang recovery efforts sa Siargao dahil sa kakulangan ng funding support mula sa gobyerno.

Dapat aniyang gawing prayoridad ng DOT ang pondo para sa reconstruction ng tourism infrastructure sa isla, bilang isa sa top tourist destinations sa bansa.

Hinikayat din nito ang kagawaran sa ilalim ng pamumuno ni Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat na bigyan si Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA) Chief Operating Office Mark Lapid ng lahat ng suportang kakailanganin upang mapabilis ang implementasyon ng lahat ng programa sa rehabilitasyon ng Siargao.

Isang Government-Owned and Controlled Corporation (GOCC) ang TIEZA na nakakonekta sa DOT. Nabuo ito sa pamamagitan ng Republic Act No. 9593 o Tourism Act of 2009.

Kabilang sa tungkulin ng TIEZA ang building tourism infrastructure, designation, regulation at supervision ng Tourism Enterprise Zones (TEZs), operation at management ng TIEZA Assets, at koleksyon ng Philippine Travel Tax.

Ani Ong, ang 50 porsyentong travel taxes na makokolekta ay ilalaan para sa TIEZA, 40 porsyento sa Commission on Higher Education (CHED) para sa tourism-related educational programs at courses, habang 10 porsyento naman sa National Commission for Culture and Arts (NCCA).

Ngunit dahil sa pandemya, hindi sapat ang nakokolektang travel tax ng gobyerno upang maalalayan ang mandato ng TIEZA.

“Since TIEZA is still in the recovery phase because of the pandemic, I think that the DOT should step up the plate in expediting the recovery efforts in Siargao because this island province only depends on tourism. DOT should immediately restore all the tourism-related infrastructures that were destroyed by Typhoon Odette so that Siargao and its people can immediately recover,” pahayag ni Ong.
