Sen. Drilon napundi sa tigas ng Comelec sa walang voter’s registration extension
Binatikos ni Senate Minority Leader Franklin Drilon ang Commission on Election (Comelec) na hindi na palawigin pa ang isinasagawang voter’s registration.
“It is a clear voter suppression regulation. You suppress the right of the voter to vote. That is a cardinal sin in our democratic system of government,” diretsahang sinabi ni Drilon sa pagdinig sa pagdinig sa 2022 budget ng Comelec.
Bunga nito, hiniling ni Drilon na ipagpaliban muna ang desisyon sa hinihinging budget ng Comelec sa susunod na taon.
Ikinatuwiran naman ng Comelec, ang kanilang resolusyon na nagtakda na ang huling araw ng voter’s registration ay sa darating na Setyembre 30.
Ngunit tinawag ni Drilon na ilegal ang resolusyon dahil nakasaad sa batas na ang pagpaparehistro ng mga botante ay dapat araw-araw hanggang sa 120 araw bago ang isang regular na eleksyon.
“Strictly speaking, a qualified voter is given until January 8, 2022 or 120 days before the May 2022 elections to register. Therefore, the request of Congress to extend the voter’s registration by 30 days is consistent with Section 8 of RA 8189,” paliwanag nito.
Kamakailan lang, inaprubahan ng 23 senador ang resolusyon na humihimok sa Comelec na palawigin ang voter’s registration.
Humihingi ang Comelec ng P4.3 bilyong pondo para sa susunod na taon, bukod pa sa P13.63 bilyong inilaan para sa pagdaraos ng 2022 national and local elections.
