Greek alphabet gagamitin na sa pagbibinyag sa COVID 19 variants – WHO

Kikilalanin na ang COVID-19 variants sa pamamagitan ng mga letra ng Greek Alphabet, ayon sa World Health Organization (WHO).

Ngunit agad naman nilinaw ni Maria Van Kerkhove, ang WHO-COVID-19 technical team lead, na hindi naman papalitan ang naibigay nang scientific names ng ibat-ibang variants ng 2019 coronavirus.

Katuwiran ni Kerkhove iniiwasan na ang diskriminasyon sa mga bansa kung saan nadiskubre ang virus variant.

Sa bagong sistema ang tinawag na British variant at tatawagin ng Alpha variant, ang South Africa ay Beta variant, samantalang Gamma variant naman ang nadiskubre sa Brazil at Delta variant ang sa India.

“While they have their advantages, these scientific names can be difficult to say and recall, and are prone to misreporting. As a result, people often resort to calling variants by the places where they are detected, which is stigmatizing and discriminatory,” ayon sa inilabas na pahayag ng WHO.

Kayat hinihikayat ng WHO ang mga gobyerno, media outlets at iba pa na gamitin na ang bagong sistema sa pagtukoy sa COVID-19 variants.
