Closed season ng sardinas sa Visayan Sea tinapos na ng BFAR

Binawi na ng Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) ang tatlong buwang closed fishing season sa sardines sa Visayan Sea.

Ayon kay BFAR National Director Eduardo Gongona, nakasaad sa Fisheries Administrative Order (FAO) No. 167-3 s. 2013, ipinatutupad ang closed fishing season ng sardines sa Visayan Sea tuwing November 15 hanggang February 15 kada taon. Bukod sa sardines, ipinagbabawal din ang panghuhuli sa isdang herrings at mackerels.

Base sa datos ng Philippine Statistics Authority, umabot sa 391,000 metrikong tonelada ang naging produksyon ng sardinas noong 2020.

Sa naturang bilang, 15,000 metrikong tonelada o katumbas ng 4.03 porsiyento ang nakuha sa Visayan Sea.

“Knowing its importance to our country’s economy and overall food security, it is our duty to protect these species from further degradation using a science-based approach to fisheries management, parallel with the strategies of the OneDA approach to effect transformation in the agro-fishery sector,” pahayag ni Gongona.

Nabatid na apat na barko ang nahuli ng BFAR noong Nobyembre 2020 hanggang Pebrero 2021 dahil sa pangingisda sa sardinas kahit ipinatutupad pa ang tatlong buwang closed fishing season.
