Halos 22,000 preso napalaya nang magkaroon ng pandemya ng COVID-19

Umabot na sa halos, 22,000 mga preso ang napalaya sa layong ma-decongest ang mga bilangguan ngayong mayroong pandemya ng COVID-19.

Batay ito sa datos ng Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG).

Sa pahayag sinabi ni DILG Sec. Eduardo Año 21,858 na persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) ang napalaya na simula noong March 17 hanggang July 13 sa 470 na bilangguan na nasa ilalim ng Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP).

Sa nasabing bilang, 15,102 ang napalaya matapos magpiyansa, plea-bargaining, parole o kaya ay probation habang 6,756 ang napalaya matapos mapawalang-sala o ‘di kaya ay naserbisyuhan na ang sentensya.

“The DILG through the BJMP is also taking concrete measures to decongest our jails such as improving and putting up more jail facilities and fast-tracking the court hearings of PDLs,” ayon kay Año.

Nagsasagawa din ang BJMP ng targeted testing para sa mga preso sa 51 jail facilities at tatlong BJMP offices sa bansa.
