Duterte hinimok ang Asean na magkaroon ng ‘self-restraint’ sa pagresolba sa sea dispute

Nanawagan si Pangulong Rodrigo Duterte sa Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) na magkaroon ng “self-restraint” sa paghahanap ng solusyon sa isyu ng agawan ng teritoryo sa South China Sea.

Pahayag ito ng pangulo sa gitna ng Asean Summit sa Thailand.

Tiniyak naman ni Duterte ang kooperasyon ng Pilipinas, bilang Asean-China country coordinator, sa pagpapabilis ng matagal ng code of conduct (COC).

“As Asean-China Country Coordinator, the Philippines will do its utmost part to conclude negotiations on a Code of Conduct as soon as possible…Notwithstanding the lack of enthusiasm by some external partners, I believe that we in ASEAN are one in the view that an effective and substantive COC will be good for the region,” pahayag ng panggulo sa 5th Asean Plenary sa Bangkok.

Dagdag ng pangulo, dapat manatiling nagkakaisa ang Asean at gamitin ang lahat ng impluwensya para maengganyo ang mga panig na magkaroon ng “self-restraint” o pagpipigil at umiwas sa aksyon na maaaring magpalala ng sitwasyon sa rehiyon.

Sinabi naman ni Presidential Spokesman Salvador Panelo na iginiit ng pangulo na ang isyu ay dapat maresolba alinsunod sa international law kabilang ang United Nations Convention of the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
