Kinansela na ng Chile ang Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation summit na magaganap sa kalagitnaan ng Nobyembre.
Ayon sa pahayag ni Chilean President Sebastian Piñera, ang kanselasyon ay bunsod ng nagaganap na protesta sa bansa.
Sinabi ng presidente na una dapat isaalang-alang ang kaligtasan ng mga mamamayan at ang pagbabalik ng public order sa bansa.
“A president must always put his compatriots above all else. Our main concern is reestablishing public order, our citizens’ safety and social peace along with pushing through a social agenda to respond to the main demands of our citizens,” ani Piñera.
Sumiklab ang nationwide protests sa Chile matapos ang panukalang itaas ang pasahe sa public transportation.
Nagdeklara ng state of emergency ang pamahalaan sa iba’t ibang bahagi ng Chile dahil sa mga demonstrasyon.
Samantala, kinumpirma na rin ni Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo na kanselado na ang APEC na plano ring daluhan ni Pangulong Rodrigo Duterte ngunit nakadepende sa rekomendasyon ng doktor.
