Hindi magdadalawang isip si Pangulong Rodrigo Duterte na itapon sa Spratlys Island ang mga pasaway at mga matitigas ang ulo na mga squatter o informal settler.
Sa situation briefing sa Batanes matapos ang lindol, inatasan nito si Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana na patirahin sa Spratlys ang mga informal settler.
Matatandaang nagkakaroon ng gusot ngayon ang Pilipinas at China sa agawan ng teritoryo sa West Philippine Sea. Ang Spratlys ay bahagi ng West Philippine Sea.
Hindi naman tinukoy ng pangulo kung anong partikular na grupo ng mga informal settler ang kaniyang ilalagay sa Spratlys.
