Tiniyak ng China sa Pilipinas na hindi nito ookupahin ang Pag-asa Island sa West Philippine Sea sa kabila ng mga ulat na ilang Chinese militia vessels ang nasa lugar.
Sa kabila ng pahayag ay sinabi ni Philippine Ambassador to China Jose Santiago Sta. Romana na dapat pairalin ng administrayong Duterte ang patakarang “trust but verify.”
“In terms of Pag-asa, through the diplomatic discussions, the Chinese have sought to reassure us that they have no intention to use force or to occupy Pag-asa. So they have assured us,” ani Sta. Romana.
Sinabi ng opisyal na dapat gawin ng bansa ay panatilihin ang pagbabantay kahit tiniyak ng China na walang agresibong aksyon laban sa tropa ng gobyerno ng Pilipinas.
“But you know, the diplomatic action is take them on their word but verify and keep your vigilance high. So trust but verify. So this is our attitude. We welcome any reassurance of you know, that there won’t be any act of force against our people, against our soldiers,” dagdag nito.
Pahayag ito ng ambassador sa gitna ng pag-iikot ng daang-daang barko ng China sa Pag-asa Island sa Kalayaan Group of Islands na sakop ng Pilipinas.
Nasa China ngayon si Pangulong Rodrigo Duterte para sa Second Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation at isa ang maritime row sa mga isyu na inaasahang matatalakay.
