Rice self-sufficiency target isang malaking kalokohan na ayon sa DA

Isang malaking kalokohan na sa ngayon kung tatargetin pa ng Department of Agriculture (DA) ang pagiging rice self-sufficient ng bansa.

Ito ang sinabi ni Agriculture Sec. Manny Piñol kasunod ng pagsasabatas ng Rice Import Liberalization Act na naglalayong payagan ang pagpasok sa bansa ng maraming imported rice.

Gayunman, sinabi ni Piñol na pananatilihin nila ang 93-percent rice self-sufficiency rate.

“We will have to review our rice sufficiency target,” he said in an interview with reporters. “We just have to be content with 93 percent because the inflow of imported rice may affect prices of rice in the market and further dampen the buying price of palay,” paliwanag ng opisyal.

Sinabi ni Piñol na target ng DA paabutin sa 20 million metric tons ang rice production ngayong taon na mas malaki ng bahagya kumpara sa 19.06 million metric tons noong 2018.

Sa Marso 5 ay magsisimula na ang implementasyon ng rice tarrification law na inaasahang magpapababa sa inflation rate.

Sa ilalim ng nasabing batas na papayagan na ang mag-import ng iba’t ibang grupo ng bigas na magreresulta sa mababang presyo nito sa pamilihan.

Sinabi rin ng pamahalaan  bilang safety net ay titiyakin nilang mapapatawan ng tamang buwis ang mga papasok na bigas sa bansa.

Sinabi naman ng ilang grupo ng mga magsasaka na papatayin ng rice tarrification law ang lokal na industrya ng palay sa Pilipinas dahil sa pagbaha ng mga imported na bigas.
