Suportado ni Pangulong Rodrigo Duterte ang panukala ni National Historical Commission of the Philippines Chairman Dr. Rene Escalante na palitan ang pangalan ng Mactan International Airport sa Mactan City, Cebu at gawing Lapu-Lapu International Airport.
Dismayado ang pangulo dahil mas binibigyang prayoridad ang pagkilala kay Magellan na unang nanakop sa Pilipinas.
Ipinaliwanag ng pangulo na si Lapu-Lapu ang nakipaglaban kay Magellan at nanindigan laban sa pananakop ng mga dayuhan.
Biro pa ng pangulo, imbes na bigyan ng pagkilala ay ginagawa pang escabeche ang isdang Lapu-Lapu.
“Alam mo Magellan was the first invader to set foot here in the Philippines. It was Lapu-Lapu who fought them. Why is he more honored in this country”, dagdag pa ng pangulo.
