Agri-company sa U.S pinagmulta ng $289-M dahil sa cancer

Pinagmumulta ng San Francisco jurors ng $289 Million in damages ang agricultural company na Monsanto.

Ito ay makaraang magkaroon ng non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma ang magsasaka na si Dawayne Johnson

Ang non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma ay isang uri ng cancer na nagpapahina sa immune system ng isang tao dahil sa pagkasira ng white blood cells.

Maliban kay Johnson ay 800 iba pa na umano’y nagkaroon ng iba’t ibang uri ng sakit tulad ng cancer ang nagsampa ng kaso sa Monsanto.

Kilala ang Monsanto sa agricultural industry bilang pangunahing supplier ng iba’t ibang uri ng pamatay-kulisap at damo o herbicide.

Makaraang ang ilang araw ng deliberasyon ay pinagtibay ng Superior Court of California sa San Francisco ang pagmumulta ng Monsanto ng $250 Million bilang punitive damages at $39 Million bilang compensatory damages kay Johnson.

Samantala, sinabi naman ng naturang kumpanya na iaapela nila ang nasabing desisyon ng jury sa kanilang kaso.

“We will appeal this decision and continue to vigorously defend this product, which has a 40-year history of safe use and continues to be a vital, effective and safe tool for farmers and others,” ayon sa pahayag ni Monsanto Vice President Scott Partridge.

Naniniwala naman ang iba pang complainants na kakatigan rin ng hukuman ang kanilang isinampang reklamo laban sa Monsanto.
