Sa unang pagkakataon mula nang maupo sa pwesto, pinangunahan ni Pangulong Rodrigo Duterte ang pagdiriwang ng Araw ng Kalayaan.

Sa kanyang talumpati, iginiit ng pangulo na sa kabila ng kanyang matatapang na pahayag at pagtutol ng ilang grupo – isa lang aniya ang mangingibabaw – ang pagkakaisa sa pagmamahal sa bayan.
